Hostyn - 11 miles north. State
of Texas plaque on Church grounds denoting "The Oldest Czech
Settlement in Texas" with the first Czech families arriving in
1856. Named in honor of settlers coming from Hostyn,
Czechoslovakia. Replica of Lourdes Grotto in France, built
thanking God for bringing an end to the great drought of 1924-25.
Home of two Civil War cannons honoring Joseph Lidiak and his son,
John, who fought on opposite sides of the war, and are buried,
side by side in the parish cemetery. Church grounds decorated with

antique furniture, glassware, and documents, Livery stable contains wagons with vintage

Kreische Brewery State Historic Site
- LaGrange, 14 miles north. Ruins of a stone brewery, one of the first commercial
breweries in Texas, and home built in the 1840's by a German stonemason, Heinreich

Monument Hill State Historic Site
- LaGrange, 14 miles north. Monument Hill serves as burial site for Texans who drew black
beans of death after Mier Expedition against Mexico, and for 41 soldiers who died in
conflict with Mexicans at Salado Creek battle of 1842. Group

Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc. - 17 miles north. A
developing multifunctional facility serving to preserve and
promote the history, language, culture, and heritage of Texans of
Czech ethnicity. The Center now hosts a small library, gift shop,
display area, restored early Texas-Czech farmhouse, and walking
trail. The Amphitheater is nearing completion. The TCHCC is open

The Jersey Barnyard

17 miles north. Tour the barnyard and see Belle, the "singing cow" of the
Bluebell Ice Cream commercial and a cow milking demonstration. Reminisce on a
tractor-drawn hayride across the pasture to the working dairy tour.
